The LSC-CyFair library is starting an online poetry discussion series. Every other week a new poem will be posted here in the library blog and readers are welcome to discuss the poem in the comments section of the blog.
The first poem up for discussion is "Praise Song for the Day" by Elizabeth Alexander. This poem was written for President Barack Obama's inauguration and read at the inauguration ceremony by Ms. Alexander on January 20, 2009.

"Praise Song for the Day" is a plain speaking poem that inspires without the use of elevated language, or any exaggeration of the poetic tools. It's as if the poet were sitting right next to you explaining her philosophy, using the elements of daily living to share her "take" on life. "Someone is stiching up a hem," "trying to make music," and offer praise to those things, great and small, that are so important in our lives. Mary Margaret Carlisle, Sol Magazine Projects
Great idea. Good choice of poem. Claire
I think this was a good poem for the day. It looked back at the way things were, then looked forward with hope to the way things could be: "what if the word were love?" The world would be a different place!

I appreciated the theme of the poem, I felt it reflected exactly what our new president was trying to convey, but somehow it lacked the emotion of the moment.
I was hoping for something that left more of an emotional impact.
